What is the difference between a Sticker and a Decal?

A photo of a name decal and a sticker

The terms stickers and decals are used interchangeably for the same thing, but technically they are different.

The Oxford dictionary definition of both is:

sticker n. an adhesive label or notice, generally printed or illustrated.

decal n. a design prepared on special paper for transfer onto another surface such as glass, porcelain, or metal.

In other words, a decal is more specialised and has an additional transfer medium, generally called application tape. The printed medium is sandwiched between the backing sheet and application tape. You peel the printed medium from the backing sheet. It stays stuck to the top layer application tape. You then hold the application tape and stick both the printed medium and application tape on the surface. Once stuck in place, you peel off the application tape, leaving only the printed medium behind.

Example of a Decal and a Sticker

Here's a photo of a "decal", on the left (a name decal created with our Decal Designer™), and a "sticker", on the right:

The name decal consists of three layers.
1) The backing. Usually paper.
2) The printed medium, sandwiched in the middle.
3) The application tape on top.

The sticker, is just backing paper and the printed medium. There is no application tape.

Application Tape

Here's a photo showing the name decal with the application tape and printed medium being separated from the backing paper. Note how the printed medium stays attached to the application tape as the backing paper is peeled away:

The Final Products

And finally, here's a photo of the "decal" with its application tape, partially peeled back, revealing the printed medium in all its glory. In this photo, the "sticker" has also been removed from its backing paper:

Conclusion:

So basically, a decal and a sticker are essentially the same thing when fitted. The main difference is that the "decal" has application tape fitted, which means that it can be placed in position with precision without having to touch the printed medium. Whereas to fit the "sticker", you have to hold onto the thing itself, which doesn't allow it to be positioned accurately. i.e. it is "Peel and Stick"

Name decals and name stickers are fitted to objects such as bicycle frames or helmets, which are usually painted. In our example we printed on clear vinyl. This allows the paint colour to show through the vinyl, leading to a much more professional finish, as only the actual print is visible. At the same time, the clear section provides more surface area for the adhesive than would be the case if the flag and letters were cut out individually, leading to a much more secure fit.

If no application tape was fitted, fingerprints could be visible on the clear vinyl when stuck in place from holding the sticky side. Therefore, a "decal" is a much better option than a "sticker" for this application. Ensuring a high quality, professional looking finished product that will last for years.
